The story of Casa Nachiro
The foundations that today support Casa Nachiro, a historic residence in Nardò, preserve the passage of ancient civilizations. These peoples marked the history of the Mediterranean over many centuries. Its roots sink deep into the 8th century BC, when the Messapi shaped the first outlines of the city. Later, these stones witnessed the splendor of ancient Greek Neriton. They also remained silent witnesses to the passage of the Romans. In the 3rd century BC, the city was renamed Neretum.
The soul of these environments changed profoundly between the 5th and 11th centuries. During this period, the Byzantines transformed the local economy. In fact, they encouraged the transition from grain production to oil production. This productive vocation would mark the identity of the place for centuries.
Later, in the 11th century, the Normans embraced and preserved this vocation. After taking possession of the city, they fortified its walls. Nestled against the new fortifications, the structure became part of Pittagio San Paolo from the 15th century onward. This was a neighborhood of the historic Neretine Jewish quarter, along today’s Via Pellettieri.
Since the year one thousand, the Jewish community animated this labyrinth of stone. Over time, these spaces became industrious warehouses and tanneries. A few steps from this artisan world lies today’s Piazza delle Erbe. It was once the secret and silent garden of the Carmelite friars. Even today, this place surrounds the historic house in the center of Nardò with peace and timeless charm.
The ancient trappeto
The name trappeto evokes a millenary heritage. Its roots lie in the Greek trapetón and in the Latin trapētus. Both words refer to the press, the ancient instrument used to reveal the soul of the olive. For this reason, the trappeto is more than a working place. Casa Nachiro preserves this secret in a 16th-century underground oil mill in Nardò. Today, this ancient space has become a charming dwelling in Salento. At that time, the underground became a strategic refuge. It was a treasure chest where liquid gold rested safe from light and heat. Moreover, it protected the oil from the continuous Saracen raids that affected Salento.
This stone is not just matter. Instead, it is a continuous narrative. The underground oil mill stands on the remnants of ancient Messapian granaries. It probably also rests on the foundations of a Byzantine castrum. This ancient structure stood near the Norman-era moat of Nardò. Therefore, Casa Nachiro preserves several layers of Mediterranean history. Throughout winter, time was marked by an ancient and exhausting ritual. Men recruited for the occasion often came from the sea. They lived isolated in the deepest darkness. By the light of lamps placed in niches, they guided the mule around the large grinding stone. These niches were discovered during the restoration. Today, they can still be admired inside the residence.
It was an existence of extreme toil. The only comfort of those men is now testified by the terracotta pipes found during the restoration. These pipes were often filled with opium to endure superhuman efforts. In spring, however, the same men returned to the sea. They transported the oil from Gallipoli, then considered the world capital of lamp oil. From there, the oil reached the great European capitals.
Today, the presses, decantation tanks, and ancient spaces of the oil mill still tell their story. They do so through the graffiti etched on the walls.. A Latin cross and a Greek cross celebrate the meeting of ancient rites. Meanwhile, the graffiti of a sailing ship reveals the deep bond between the oil mill workers and the sea.
The Nachiro
In this underground universe of Casa Nachiro moved the legendary figure of the Nachiro. He was the charismatic leader of the oil mill workers. His name derives from the Greek naukleros, meaning the helmsman. However, he was not a mere supervisor. He was the true captain of an underground ship. Directly under the owner’s orders, he governed the crew of sailors. In winter, these men abandoned the sea to dedicate themselves to olive pressing. The Nachiro dictated the exhausting rhythms and work shifts. For this reason, he was both feared and respected.
His work guaranteed the continuous cycle of Salento’s gold production. The oil mill workers held him in almost sacred reverence. This reverence survives in an ancient Salento saying: “quandu cala lu nachiru calanu li trappitari”. Only when the chief dipped the spoon into the dish could the oil mill workers begin their meal.
At the end of the season, the Nachiro and his crew emerged into the sunlight. Then, they returned to the routes that carried oil throughout Europe. In this place, the soul of the commander still lives. It bears witness to a time suspended between the depths of the underground and the infinity of the sea.

As a result, the productive history of oil in Nardò shines again. It now offers a welcome made of memory, passion, and beauty. In this dwelling carved from stone in Salento, the skilled work of past generations can still be felt. One can breathe the simple values of yesterday. These are the same values that make Casa Nachiro unusual, special, and profoundly authentic.
